From the Mediterranean to the Alps

We went to the Sicilian brothers' bakery-restaurant for breakfast this morning. They could tell that we were having a difficult time deciding which pastry to choose, since they were all fresh and hot. One of the brothers kept coming out of the kitchen with pan after pan of the wonderful goodness. Finally he pointed to one particular pastry, and in his thick, Sicilian accent said..."Thees one ees Reek Steves' fav'rite!" So, I tried it, and it was indeed very, very good. Olen had an apple sweet roll, which was also good. The Sicilian told the man standing beside me, "We hava no eggs! Thees es Italy! No eggs for breekfust en Italy!". I guess that settled the egg issue!

As it turned out, I was wrong about our not going to be able to visit the fifth little town in the Cinque Terre on this trip. We got on a train from Vernazza to Levanto, but by mistake we got off at Sestre Levante...similar names, but not the same place at all. We did not stay long in Sestre Levante as very few people spoke English, including the train attendants and ticket-sales people. So, we took the train back south to the village of Monterossa to spend a few minutes before we could catch another train to the correct location.

We were glad to get to see Monterosso, although it is the most "touristy" of the five villages in the Cinque Terre area with a large beach area (if you think of rocks and dark sand as a beach). The beach umbrellas in the early morning sunshine made a colorful scene.

From Monterossa we caught a train to Genoa, where we changed to a train to Milan. The train to Milan was very crowded, but we finally found two seats together and shared a coach with a couple from New Zealand and a couple from the US. As it turned out, no one in our coach spoke the local language or could understand the announcements, so we just got off when we could read the sign, "Milan" at the train station.

The train station in Milan is huge! We tried to arrange a more-efficient schedule to get to our destination for the night, but quickly learned that for trains, Zurich in Switzerland is much like Atlanta is for airplanes in the US. For some reason most airplanes in the US go through Atlanta, and most trains in Switzerland go through Zurich. Since our connections had us going through Zurich, we hopped a train and headed toward Zurich, even though that was not the direction we wanted to head at the time.

We are back in Switzerland, and it is good to see the mountains again. I have loved every place we have been, but there is nothing to compare with the Alps!

We finally arrived at our hotel in Chur, (pronounced "khoor") Switzerland. Today has been mostly riding trains and making connections. There has not been much worth photographing and/or blogging about. Tomorrow we plan one more day full of sightseeing. We'll see how much we can cram into that last wonderful day.

If you had any travels today, I hope they took you to pleasant places. If you were at home today, I know you were in a pleasant place. Until tomorrow...
