A Celebration Trip

Olen and I will celebrate our fiftieth wedding anniversary on December 20 of this year, and we are doing something special to mark this major event in our lives.  Of course, knowing us, you might guess that we chose to travel.

We decided to take a trip with our children and their spouses.  We counted up our frequent flyer miles, and searched the internet for an affordable place to stay that could house all eight of us.   Eventually we located a six-bedroom chalet in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland. Reservations were made.  With ten grandchildren remaining at home, along with work schedules and the other responsibilities we have, you can imagine the hoops we had to jump through to make the plan work.

On Thursday of this week, Olen and I are scheduled to fly to Switzerland.  Our three children and their spouses plan to leave on Friday.

As some of you know, we have had several “bumps in the road” on our way to this departure date.  Some of our family members have had serious illnesses over the summer, and Olen’s mother is currently at Valley View Rehabilitation Center in Madison, recovering from what we believe to have been a stroke.  So, even at this late date, our plans could need to be changed or even cancelled.

With all of these facts in mind, we are remaining upbeat about our plan.  We are going to take the advice of my friend and “live in the moment” while we are gone. We try to keep our family updated through this blog while we’re away from home, and you’re all welcome to take a peek at our daily updates and photos if you would like to do so.

We don’t expect everything to go flawlessly, but we do expect the week to be full of fun and adventures. It should be interesting…four couples staying in a chalet we have seen only through internet photos…trying to keep a group of eight together through numerous train-changes…the fact that none of us speak any German…ten children and a sick parent at home under the care of patient friends and family members…we can’t see how anything could possibly go wrong!
